While anything and everything is important to medical personnel attempting to treat you, some information is more critical than others. It is imperative to have immediate access to current medications, any food, insect or drug allergies and any existing or ongoing medical issues.

People with certain medical conditions wear medical IDs to alert emergency medical professionals in an emergency. The following are good reasons to wear a medical ID:

 Abnormal EKG Emphysema Malignant Hyperthermia
Adrenal Insufficiency Epilepsy/Seizure disorder Mental Retardation
Alcoholism Food, Drug or Insect allergies Myasthenia Gravis
Alzheimer’s/Memory Impairment Hearing Impaired Pulmonary Conditions
 Anemia Hemolytic Anemia Rare diseases
 Asthma Hypertension Renal Failure
Blood Disorders Kidney Failure Seizure Disorder
Blood thinners/ Anticoagulants Laryngectomy Sickle Cell Anemia
 Cardiac problems Leukemia Situs Inversus
 Dementia Lupus Special needs children
 Diabetes Lymphomas NO KNOWN CONDITIONS

Our medical ID jewelry is both fashionable and functional. If you are experiencing a medical emergency and unable to communicate it is important that the Emergency Medical Responder know exactly what medications or medical conditions you may or may not have. In these situations, time is of the essence and knowing either way allows them to treat you confidently while eliminating the guesswork.

Anything may be engraved on your medical jewelry provided that space allows. The order of our suggested engraving format would be:

First and Last Name
Date of Birth (DOB)
Medical Conditions
Life Threatening Medications (i.e. blood thinners)
Allergic to: _____________
Emergency Contacts (ICE: name, phone)
When placing your order our Engraving Preview tool will show you how your engraved message will appear on your medical jewelry.

Engraving your name on your medical ID is a personal preference but we recommend that at least your first name is included. In an emergency, emergency responders will say a person’s name to get their attention and check for responsiveness. We recommend that all Alzheimer’s, Dementia and other mentally compromised patients engrave their name and address or contact information of a friend, caregiver or family member.

List only those medical conditions that would be important in an emergency. For example, a minor surgery that took place several years ago may no longer be relevant to your current medical care.

List only medicines you wish to be engraved. Generally, this would be prescription medicine, taken on a long-term daily basis which are unlikely to change. You may wish to list the most important medicines first.

List only those allergies which are severe and can cause a life threatening event.

Space is limited, so summarize your information with short, descriptive words. We provide Emergency Medical Cards with every purchase that can include as much detail as you would like.

If you need help deciding what to engrave consult with your physician or pharmacist.

Contrary to popular belief, stainless steel is NOT nickel free! Stainless steel holds the nickel tightly bound within it, but it still contains a small percentage of nickel. Many nickel allergy sufferers can wear stainless steel with no allergic reaction. Some cannot. It all depends on how allergic you are and how much nickel was mixed when making the steel. Titanium, tungsten and sterling silver are better choices if you have concerns with nickel allergies.

Caution: If your product includes an acid etched and/or paint filled medical alert symbol do not use harsh chemicals as it may interact and dissolve the colored paint.

Silicone Rubber products: Use mild dish soap and warm water to clean the surface of the product.

Stainless Steel: The attractive and hygienic surface appearance of stainless steel products cannot be regarded as completely maintenance free. All grades and finishes of stainless steel may in fact stain, discolor or attain an adhering layer of grime in normal service. To achieve maximum corrosion resistance the surface of the stainless steel must be kept clean. Stainless steel is easy to clean. Washing with soap or a mild detergent and warm water followed by a clean water rinse is usually quite adequate. An enhanced appearance will be achieved if the cleaned surface is finally wiped dry.

Gold Plated: Caring for gold plated jewelry is very similar to caring for solid gold. The only exception is you really have to be more careful when it comes to cleaning. We recommend you use a clean soft cloth when cleaning. At all times, avoid abrasive cleaning materials. The chemical used in these cleaner are just too harsh and may result in the loss of its color and tarnish. In some cases, the chemical may actually remove gold plated layer. If you are wearing a gold plated jewelry, make sure to take them off before you wash your hands or when doing any physical activities, i.e. cleaning. To extend its life usage, we recommend you keep them in a velvet lined jewelry box or case that contains compartments for each item.

Titanium: Use rubbing alcohol, acetone, window cleaner or non-moisturizing soap and water and a soft cloth to gently wipe away dulling dirt and oils. Avoid metal polishes or scrubbing soaps, because these contain abrasives which may scrub away the sub-micron thick color layer.

Leather: Leather should be cleaned regularly. First, use a soft cloth or micro-fiber cloth to dust the surface. Saddle soap works beautifully on leather. Another option for cleaning leather is to take a damp cloth, wipe it across moisturizing soap and lather the leather.

Nylon: Start by mixing together a little bit of dish soap or mild shampoo and water. Get the band wet, then use an old toothbrush dipped in the soapy water to scrub away any gunk, grime or residue from the watch band. When the nylon watch band is scrubbed clean, rinse it thoroughly with clean, clear water then set it aside to dry.

Listing your medications will provide medical responders better guidance on how to initiate treatment and lessen the chance of a drug interaction.

Listing your prescription medicines is critical. However, engraving space is limited by the size of the jewelry piece you have ordered. Our helpful “Engraving Assistant” found on the order form will guide you through the available engraving space of each item.

To know the size bracelet to order simply print, cut and wrap our handy measuring tape around the wrist while allowing for a comfort fit. When completed, order the bracelet size closest to your measurement, less the length of the engraving plate, if the plate is ordered separately. Be sure to allow for the length of the engraving plate and order for the size of the bracelet only. We will do our best to get as close as possible to the size you need. Keep in mind that some bracelets and wrist bands are pre-sized while others can be changed and are available in ¼” increments.

Many of our silicone wristbands are designed to be cut to the proper size for a comfort fit. This can be done quite easily and will only take a moment to do so. Please refer to our “Sizing Instruction” pamphlet which was included within the packaging of your product delivery. The USB device is designed to work on any Windows™ Based PC or Macintosh™ Computer. If you don’t have access to a computer at home, ask a friend or relative to help you. Also, most public libraries offer free computer access to their patrons.

Simply remove the USB from the USB Wallet Card or USB Jewelry and insert into any standard 2.0 OR 3.0 USB drive on your Windows™ or Macintosh™ computer. The USB will fit into any common USB port although it may be a tight fit for the first few tries. The USB device will be automatically recognized and will launch automatically. You will find the icon and folder named MY_MED_INFO in your File Explorer (shown below).  Depending upon your operating system software you may have to double click on the Blue Star of Life symbol to open the folder.

It is possible to insert the USB either upside-down or right-side up.  Only one direction will work, depending upon your computer (generally with the gold contacts up).  You may have inserted the connector facing the wrong direction. Remove the USB and turn the USB connector over, or in the opposite direction, and plug it back in. When the USB is inserted correctly you will hear and audible chime and/or see the medical icon in your File Explorer directory.

The USB is being delivered to you without any forms on it but is a properly labeled and formatted USB for quick identification as a medical alert product. Depending upon your computer preference settings you may see three small files that were pre-loaded.  If not, it is not a problem as your computer is set to hide these files. When inserted it will create a re-named (MY_MED_INFO) Removable Device folder in your computer directory, File Explorer. This folder will be identified with the blue medical alert “star of life” icon and the file named as MY_MED_INFO (see icon below).

You should not expect to find any complicated forms to complete of any kind. It will be a empty USB just as you would have found from any other USB you may have purchased in the past. Your medical information will be saved (from any source you would like) onto this USB.

USB’s with embedded forms are outdated technology with the following inherent technical limitations.

  • The device is generally write-protected and limits you to entering only the blank fields on the form. You generally cannot add anything additional.
  • The USB form can be accessed only on a PC Windows computer operating system. During an emergency, this is not ideal unless you know what type of computer system the emergency responder will be using.
  • If you misplace the USB your critical information will be lost and will have to be reentered.
  • The USB’s that are used with an embedded form are not the mini Chip On Board (COB) and therefore they are not as compact and are not waterproof.

Our USB products are designed with an open architecture meaning that you can create and save anything you would like. There is no time consuming and limiting forms to complete. We suggest creating and/or saving the following information.  Simply complete any form you would like and save the document to your USB.  Many blank forms can be found on the internet. Click below for one such search. https://www.freeprintablemedicalforms.com (not affiliated with Universal Medical Data)

Electronic Medical Records (these can generally be downloaded directly onto your USB from your healthcare provider).  Ideal to travel anywhere with all your medical records.

Emergency Medical Card (This can be found and completed on the UMD website)

Your Personal Medical Journal.  Can be created using a simple Word document.

Medical Images (x-ray, CT Scan, etc.)

Immunizations

Lab Reports

Heath Care Directives (Living Will, Power of Attorney forms)

Saving information onto this USB is done the same as any other USB product you may have used in the past. Please refer to our guide “Using Your Medical Alert USB” pamphlet which was included within the packaging of your product delivery. You may also access this document HERE

If you followed the steps above to save your information, but your information is not found on the USB, then it is most common that your information was saved elsewhere on your computer. The USB icon was likely not selected when you clicked the save button. No problem, the information must be located and then can easily be dragged and dropped onto the USB to get it where you want.

To locate the document on your PC select the Windows Start button (see icons below) on your keyboard or computer screen and type FILE EXPLORER. Once on File Explorer, type your named file in the Search Bar, generally found on the top far right of your computer screen.

When located, simply left click on your mouse and hold to drag and drop onto the USB medical alert icon in your directory.
