Engraving your name on your medical ID is a personal preference but we recommend that at least your first name is included. In an emergency, emergency responders will say a person’s name to get their attention and check for responsiveness. We recommend that all Alzheimer’s, Dementia and other mentally compromised patients engrave their name and address or contact information of a friend, caregiver or family member.
List only those medical conditions that would be important in an emergency. For example, a minor surgery that took place several years ago may no longer be relevant to your current medical care.
List only medicines you wish to be engraved. Generally, this would be prescription medicine, taken on a long-term daily basis which are unlikely to change. You may wish to list the most important medicines first.
List only those allergies which are severe and can cause a life threatening event.
Space is limited, so summarize your information with short, descriptive words. We provide Emergency Medical Cards with every purchase that can include as much detail as you would like.

I was so excited when this finally came in the mail. After months of searching, I had finally found a Med Alert ID that would hold more than a few lines of text. The thing is, this one is not engraved at all. The letters are printed on the light steel dog tag. Misleading product title. This isn’t “engraved” or “laser engraved,” it’s laser printed.

Adequate but somewhat disappointing. The photos create the impression of a tag that is both thicker than it is in reality and that also has much bolder, blacker lettering than it does in reality. The photos also show the chain passing through the tag, whereas the delivered tag has a ring for he chain to pass through. It’s OK. But not exactly as high in finish and quality as I had expected. Usable.

The tag is adequate, but it is clear it is only modestly sturdy and will not last an extended period. I began wearing it with my nitroglycerin container on the same chain. It became clear right off that the two rubbing together would wear the tag pretty quickly. It was already showing signs of abrasion after ten days. I ended up putting the two items on different chains of different lengths. This kept them from rubbing. The item is adequate…but that’s about the most one can say for it.

I have a variety of medical conditions, most are important enough that if I am ever incapacitated, I want the care givers to be aware of them. Some could mean life or death depending on the situation. With 9 lines and 22 characters per line on front & back, you can put more than abbreviations. This medical alert tag is not a fancy piece of pseudo-jewelry. It’s simple and just does the job. It’s plain. The edges are not rounded, but flat, 90 degrees to the front and rear surfaces and are not coined or rounded. The lettering is sharp, clear, and easily readable. It has the most room, in terms of lines of print, of the numerous tags I researched. It seems durable. In the past, I have had stainless steel and sterling silver tags that tarnish after being worn next to the skin. To alleviate that, I spray it with a few light coats of clear enamel. Without that coating, I don’t know how this tag would hold up. I prefer the extra protection of the clear coating.

I wear this tag on my runs to alert emergency personnel of my medical conditions/issues. It is unobtrusive and I don’t fill like I am wearing it. The quality of the tag is better than I expected. Very solid, thick. The tag provides more than enough lines front and back. I was able to list my medical conditions, Emergency Contact, Doctor’s contact info on the front and all my medications and doses on the back. The lettering is solidly engraved into the metal and is very clear and precise. The wording was accurate “to the T”, every capitol, every space, every comma/parenthesis. The tag came with a run of the mill chain, functional, but does not match the quality of the tag. Very pleased with this purchase!

This replaces one that was laser printed. I wore it around my neck all the time and noticed that the printing was wearing off – getting dull – and needed to be replaced. I was able to put more needed info on this one, and even though the printing is smaller it is very readable. Time will tell how it will hold up. I bought this same necklace about 2 months ago. It was PERFECT. The writing was large, clear, bold, and easy to read. I had some changes in my medical condition and decided to purchase a new necklace. The new necklace arrived today and the writing is tiny and very light. I can barely read what it says. I have no idea why since I used less than 22 characters on each line (most lines only had 17 or 18 characters). I will definitely not be using this because I don’t feel that emergency responders could read it. I can’t even read it. Very disappointing – especially since my last necklace was so great.

Had a slight “dimple” in one corner when it arrived, and they immediately said they’d ship a whole new tag, which they did and they did ship it immediately. That’s outstanding customer service. The engraving is also perfect, and the black filling has been done perfectly. I wish they would offer a “Cuban” 3mm flat stainless link chain, like the really old MedicAlert tags used to come with, but everyone uses these bulkier stainless bead chains these days. (You can find the “Cuban” flat stainless ones from MedicAlert or on eBay about $11 for 30″. Or $30 at a flea market., ouch.) If you do try to put the tag on a stainless chain, you may also need to enlarge to hanging-hole, in order to make room for the attaching loop to clear the chain. But everyone swears these “light shade pull chains” really are strong, I may just be out of touch on that. I like my old chain, and I think UMD offers an excellent product, excellent service, and way less hassle than “genuine” MedicAlert, who will argue with you over what you want engraved on the tag. And only engrave half as much.
When I need to revise my tags, I’m coming right back here, without even looking at anything else.

This is a great item for anyone with a chronic condition. In our case, my husband has a heart condition and dementia. There is plenty of room on the front and back for an emergency contact and PCP (doctor) information. The ball chain is not flimsy and the metal used is stainless steel so the risk of loss, damage or an allergic reaction is minimal. You can use the small contact information/prescription card for a wallet or purse. There is plenty of information to scribe prescriptions and full details on this card; we are up to about 10 and there was still room. NOTE: if you are going to write on the card, don’t use gel pen ink; it will smear. The tag information is engraved deep in the metal so there is no need to worry that the information will scratch off or will wear off during the wearer’s lifetime. If you are hesitating over the price, don’t. In this case, you will get what you pay for. A word about the seller – excellent service. As soon as I placed the order, I got an email with a form to fill out (all electronic) and to specify back and front information. I put my name, relationship and contact information along with the husband’s name. On the back, I put our PCP doctor, his contact information and his diagnosis information with a note to contact the PCP for full diagnosis and prescription information. They will help with information and suggestions. The tags arrived with no errors and BEFORE the projected date. Cannot recommend these enough.

The engraving is clear and the item arrived quickly. However, it has a sharp edge which is the reason for the 3 star rating. We were able to smooth it out with a metal file, but if you’re not handy or don’t have one you’ll probably want to get a silencer for it.

The picture doesn’t do it justice, it is much nicer than the picture. The customer service kept in constant contact, which is kind of rare. The tag arrived sooner than expected. Th only thing I would have done different was to write a couple of rough drafts on what I wanted it to say.

Love it. Far better than the cheap one we got from the American Liver Foundation when my husband got his transplant. That chain and fob made his neck turn green. This all stainless is much better. And you definitely want to get the rubber surrounds. Edges kind of sharp without it.

This is a nice medical alert ID for myself. I like the option for all the detail I was able to place on the tag. Also like the Emergency Medical Card that I was able to fill out or you can go to their website and fill it in and update it anytime. After I filled the information in I used construction paper or card stock and printed the completed card. Cut out and placed in my wallet. Very nice website and products to chose from. They also have helpful hints of what is recommended according to your medical condition. Thank you for a nice product and service after purchase.
